Hamilton, Ontario – May 29, 2008 - The Cameron Motorsports National Team dominated the Sunday schedule of the Ontario Regional Karting Championship last weekend as it topped all in ProShifter, Rotax Senior and Rotax Junior on day two. Addison Rayner, Michael Vincec, and Dylan Oribine pedalled the wins while others turned in impressive performances as well in Hamilton. Ethan Livingstone scored his first regional win while Curtis Fox and Nelson Learn were also on the podium at the team’s home debut for 2008. Biggest of all was Vincec’s win as it came in dominating fashion in Rotax Senior. The Cameron/CRG senior star put down all comers in what was the biggest ORKC field for the second straight event. A field of 32 was on hand at the Cameron Motorsports Karting Complex as growth has taken the seniors perilously close to needing Last Chance Qualifying races. While Vincec had no concerns in qualifying off-pole, he wasn’t totally happy with his qualifying run. “I messed up in qualifying and ruined my quick lap,” he said from the CRG tent afterward. “But I made up for it in the races, and it definitely does feel good to make up for Goodwood!” Vincec posted a 52.565 second lap in qualifying where less than a tenth of a second covered the top three and two-tenths covered the top six. In the prefinal Vincec rounded the first turn in third place and at turn two moved into second. One lap later Mikey-V took the lead at the same turn, but a tire rub from behind delayed his getaway and by the end of lap two he was back to fourth and starting over. It took six laps for him to work back to the point, but once he got there Vincec had no worries. He was over a second clear when the checkered flag waved, and confident heading to the final. “I just wanted to get a clean start and get the lead,” he said. “Then just start putting in consistent laps.” He did just that, and was never challenged. Nearly two seconds up after two laps, Vincec was five clear by the final flag. Rotax Junior rookie Dylan Oribine matched the feat in the next race up as he went from fifth to second on the first lap of the race, took the lead a lap later and checked out on a twenty-kart Junior field for his first Regional win. Oribine qualified on pole in the morning but a messy prefinal by the juniors led to him falling to seventh before working back to fourth. Making amends in the final, Oribine was second as the field rounded the first lap and took the lead into turn one the first time down the straight. “I just wanted to try to get to the inside and start picking spots one-by-one,” he said afterward. And once in the lead, Oribine walked clear as the field behind battled amongst themselves. After twenty laps the rookie was nearly six seconds up and had the quick lap of the race by over two-tenths. Though it didn’t end on the podium, a brilliant Rotax DD2 run by Eric Simon had him headed there on Saturday when his engine expired with just two laps to go. He began the day by qualifying second in the biggest DD2 field ever assembled in Ontario, and crossed third in the prefinal after fighting his way back up from fifth among the likes of the best in the province. At the start of the main event Simon followed the leader through turn one and assumed second place heading toward two. He never took a backward step from there, and after being hounded early Simon gradually worked free and was headed toward the second step of the podium when his engine expired working lap nineteen, a bottom-end failure the culprit. |
