Hamilton, Ontario – June 25, 2008 - Though the Rotax Junior field simply didn’t deliver as promised, Cameron Motorsports/CRG junior driver Jeffrey May made the best of the situation at the Sturgeon Falls Grand Prix two weeks ago as he set his goal to getting the best from himself along with winning. In a season that has him racing across North America, the 13-year-old said he enjoyed the test at hand. “Sturgeon Falls was the only street course I’ve been on other than Barrie and it was a lot of fun,” he said following the event. “It was like Barrie, only a lot shorter and without the long straightaways. A lap was around 25 seconds. It was a really smooth track other than where there was a pavement change halfway through the third corner. There was a bump and no matter what way you hit it, it was really, really big. If you went on the inside it messed up your corner entry so you just had to take the lump and go.” Competing in the Florida Winter Tour, Stars of Karting National Championship, and the Ontario Regional Karting Championship as a member of the Cameron/CRG National Team this season, May has seen a lot of different tracks already and says he is now able to get to get a handle on new ones in less time. “I feel I can get the hang of tracks quicker now,” he said of the benefit of driving a variety of layouts. “Then it’s just the fact of finding the fastest line to go on.” The seven-year veteran certainly did that at Sturgeon Falls in sweeping the day, he was on pole with a time of 25.221 seconds and his best time in the final was 25.049 seconds with a full day of laps on the tires! An impressive feat to be sure. Next up for May is the third Stars of Karting Eastern Division event where he will return to JICA action, but says the difference isn’t much from the Rotax he runs in Ontario. “JICA is a lot like Rotax because it’s the same chassis, same brakes and everything,” he said of comparing his latest class to those he’s run in the past. “Other than the carburetor there’s not a big difference between the two. Torque-wise and powerband-wise though, it’s more like an F1-K actually.” USA International Raceway in Shawano, Wisconsin, is the venue July 11-13. May enters looking for his best run of the season as he sits #23 in Eastern points. |
